Opened on June 22, 1979, Eve’s After Dark was known as a high-class after-hours club, located in Los Angeles, CA. It was the first hip hop club on the West Coast and home to the World Class Wreckin Cru which showcased the musical talents of Alonzo Williams (Owner) Sweet, Ron Ron, Billie T, Dr. Rock and Unknown DJ. And, in 1982, DJ Yella Joined the Cru with Cli N tel and Dr. Dre joining soon after.
The dance club became a launching pad for Eazy E, Ice Cube and other west coast artists (Robin Harris, DL Hugely, Chris Tucker). Eve After Dark also amplified the careers of many East Coast rappers. Run D.M.C. and Kurtis Blow booked their first Los Angeles appearances at the dance club.
In addition to exploring the rise of gangster rap and the notable careers the club influenced, the film tells the story of how the Eve After Dark was launched and the circumstances that led to its closure in 1985 as well as why it was featured at the Halftime Show of Super Bowl LVI. Through a humorous yet serious lens, the film also examines pertinent issues facing the African American community in the 1980’s such as police harassment and the crack cocaine epidemic.
